    1. On august 27, 2013, the Taliban launched an attack on an NATO base in Afghanistan. This was a base that houses many from America and Poland, located in the eastern afghan city of Ghazni city. An insurgent tried to ram a truck full of explosives into the outer walls which failed to breach, and Taliban fighters were not able to enter the base. 10 insurgents were killed by defense provided by polish soldiers. In total, 19 were killed and 63 people were wounded in this and three other attacks around Afghanistan, all part of insurgents attempting to step up there game in their campaign against the afghan government and president and against international coalition.

This event is like the battle of Cold Harbor. Grant was attempting to attack General Lee’s troops and cut off supplies to them, but instead lost almost 7,000 troops in one hour of battle. Grant thought that if he could pull lee from the safety of their base that he would be able to overpower them. This is just like this Taliban attack. If the Taliban could break one of the walls and force them to come out or be able to gain entry, they probably would’ve killed many more than they did, but instead the polish soldiers were able to stay inside the base and fight off the Taliban soldiers.

  17. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/28/us/the-lasting-power-of-dr-kings-dream-speech.html

I read my article on the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther Kings, I Have a Dream Speech. He proposed this speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963. 50 years later, President Barrack Obama gathered at the steps to share Dr. King’s remembrance. M.L. King said that he wanted everyone to be “together as one American family”, and President Obama has used those exact words in one of his speeches too. Martin Luther King knew that he couldn't change the America into a peaceful place with any violence, but he stood up to all the racial comments and all the segregation. AS we can see, this violence has not gone away, because we just had difficult news about a young man named Trayvon Martin being shot and killed, without the shooter getting any charges. One thing that I read was that Dr. King probably didn't see a black president giving his 50th anniversary speech. Dr. Martin Luther King being killed was not the end of the segregation argument, it was the beginning.
Martin Luther King’s 50th Anniversary is about him making a powerful speech on America coming together as one. It was about slavery back in time, and discrimination being gone. It was also about how there was segregation and there shouldn’t be. He wanted everyone to work as a team, not to have people start wars over the difference of their skin color. He said that there will be a day where white and black children would walk side by side without judgments. And that slaves and slave owners would be living together. All and all, Martin Luther King fought for slaves to be freed and whites and blacks to join together to be one American family.

  18. This article is about how James DiMaggio kidnapped his girlfriend Hannah Anderson. He not only kidnapped her but he also murdered Hannah’s mother and little brother and set their house on fire. Lora, the sister of James DiMaggio states that “the case is full of "holes". In the end the FBI found DiMaggio and shot him and Hannah was freed. As you see in the article, it is about a guy who did everything just to kidnap this girl.
There is one way this article connects to history and that is slavery. This was in the beginning when the north wasn’t free and slaves would try to run away. Just like the article he did everything to kidnap the girl and back then they would do anything to catch the runaway slave. In the article the man killed the girl’s mom and brother and back then the owners would pay a lot of money for a person to catch their slave. The slaves were free at the end and at end of the article the girl Hannah was free. That’s how there is a connection from this article to back then slavery.

  19. I think that this article relates back to the civil war when the guns that they had were much more lethal just like the chemicals that Syria is using on the Syrians. Back during the civil war they had invented new guns called rifles which were more lethal than the previous muskets that they used this made the death toll in the civil war go higher, just as today where the crisis in Syria is getting worse because of the chemical weapons being used on the Syrian pedestrians. The Syrian crisis also relates to the civil war because the people of Syria are fighting for something they believe in much like the confederates in the civil war fought for the right to own slaves and the union fought to end slavery. Another reason I think the Syria crisis relates to the civil war is because the toll that the crisis has on Syria is very high just like economic toll was high for the confederates but the toll for the union was little. Altogether the Syrian crisis is very relatable to the civil war because of the lethal weapons, the right for what they believe in and the toll.

  25. I read an article on how a lot of big celebrities are upset with Miley Cyrus's performance at the VMAs. She wore a very provocative outfit. Celebrities such as Madonna say that she "disappointed all women in the entertainment business." I relate this to Benedict Arnold and how everyone got mad at him for lying and being a traitor during the Civil War. Benedict Arnold was thought to be fighting for the U.S. side but he was secretly stealing their strategies and spying for the British side. These two events are similar because Miley Cyrus was hated because of one thing that she did, and Benedict Arnold was hated because of the one thing he did during the Civil War. People trusted Benedict Arnold to be on their side and he let them down by lying to them. Miley Cyrus let people down because she is supposed to be an "iconic" figure in the entertainment industry and she was very inappropriate at the VMAs. That is why these two events are similar. http://www.usnews.com/news/national/articles/2008/06/27/benedict-arnold-a-traitor-but-once-a-patriot

This article talks about how the president wants to support the Syria civilians. What the president wants to do is to plan an attack to punish the Assad regime for the use of chemical weapons. It also talks about the number of people that had to flee their homes for safety and went to neighboring countries. It says that 100,000 people have been killed in this civil war. This relates to the civil war because the US civil war and the Syria civil war both have killed many people in both countries. The Syria toll right now is 100,000 and the US civil war toll was 625,000. Plus the democrats and republicans are fighting over what to do with Syria. This is like the US civil war because the north and south were fighting over what to do with slavery. That is why the Syria civil war going on right now is like the US civil war. Civil Wars are tragic because both sides are losing country men.

  28. What caused the American Civil War was the North was no longer willing to tolerate slavery as being part of the US society and that the political power brokers in Washington were planning to abolish slavery throughout the Union. Slavery was a major issue in 1861. The two sides that made up the civil war were apart in many areas and it became worse when the perception in the South was that the North would try to impose its values on the South. Slavery was then mixed up with the states’ rights. Civil war occurred at Fort Sumter in 1861.

Syria fell into political instability and military for the first few years. Syria went into war in the Arab-Israeli in 1967. There was concentrated military power and hatred began to grow between the two countries. Egypt and Tunisia encouraged Syrian protesters to demonstrate against Assad's regime. Syria was unhappy. Syria voiced their opinion quickly after. None of these protests went over well with the government. There were a lot of kidnapping, torture and killing of protesters. The troops also opened fire. The Syrian Civil War has huge problems for the state of international relations, and not just in the Middle East, but across the world and even within the United States.

The United States is planning an attack on Syria without the support of Great Britain and other countries around the World. As soon as Thursday morning, the United States is prepared to bomb Damascus, the capital of Syria. The plans are to bomb for three days. The Navy has moved destroyers closer to Syria. These destroyers have US Tomahawk missiles that will be able to hit specific targets from a farther and safer distance for the US Navy. There are five destroyers in the Mediterranean Sea. The British Prime Minister, David Cameron, has called Parliament from their vacations in order to vote on possible action this Thursday. Also,The United States may not have support from the United Nations. Russia will veto because they support Assad. The United States can bomb without Security Council approval but Russia and China have not supported this bombing or even limited bombing. But, in Syria, people are worried that if a country does not take action, more chemical weapons will be used and more people will die.
The weaponry used during the Civil War until now has changed much but there are still the same weapons like tanks and canons still being used.Tanks, which they used a lot in the Civil War, may be used and may probably the most effective weapon if there is a ground attack. Also, the U.S army uses some of the same weaponry as we do now ,such as canons, that was also used in the Civil War. Even though the weapons are more accurate and technologically better, they are all pretty much the same. Jake Phaup

  30. The article that I found, was on the topic of the Israel and Palestinian conflicts. The conflicts between the two started long ago back in the early 1900's. The article was on a peace talk between the two happening in Jerusalem. The expected results are very, very low. This is because ever since Israel declared its independence in 1948, they have been raging at each other till even this day. I think that this relates to history because its been over 90 years and nothing has changed. There has been many peace negotiations in the past and they have all failed; I'm not expecting this one to go very different.

  31. The article that I chose was a Boston Bombing article which reminded me of what happened during the Boston Massacre in the 1700's. The article that I chose explains how many people died and how many people were injured in the Boston Marathon Bombing. The article also explains how many bombs went off and how some people were trying to protect other people from the bomb blasts. This article relates to the Boston Massacre because they are both an act of betrayal which is our kind killing our own kind. The article also relates to the Boston Massacre because of the amount of how many people died is awfully close. The Boston Bombing had 3 people die as when the Boston Massacre had 3 people die immediately and than 2 more die later because of serious wounds which make 5. Another comparison is that the people who were attacked in the Boston Massacre didn't like how the British were handling things so when they started to throw rocks at the British the British had no choice but to open fire, and with the Boston Bombing the people who set the bombs didn't like how America was running there country so they sent a message by bombing the Boston Marathon. Overall the Boston Marathon and The Boston Massacre are similar because they are both acts of violence, betrayal, and that they were both random events that happened unexpectedly.

  34. This articles talks about Syria and its use of chemical weapons on civilians. Senator John McCain, who said that he would back a limited strike if the president did more to arm the Syrian rebels and the attack was enough to weaken the Syrian military. In an hour long meeting at the White House, Mr. McCain said Obama gave general support to doing more for the Syrian rebels. Officials said that in the same conversation Obama indicated that a covert effort by the United States to arm and train Syrian rebels was beginning to yield results, the first 50-man cell of fighters, who have been trained by the C.I.A., was beginning to sneak into Syria. This relates to the civil war because they had spies who would help the other side. Also in the civil war they fought a lot and in the Syria situation it seems they want to use force to deal with it. Another thing is in the civil war they fought over slavery and in the Syria conflict they’re fighting over the chemical weapons.

  35. In this interesting article I found out that in 23 states in Venezuela, and parts of Caracas were affected even though they rarely are harmed by the blackouts. These blackouts were caused by the outage of many power lines which were neglected to be upgraded as electricity became more technological in the different states. To fix these worsening problems authorities in the Venezuelan government are trying to upgrade their electrical grids because right now according to Deputy Energy Minister Franco Silva, because their grids as is are not very well evolved with the constant growing of the 21st century. I think that this specific article relates to history pretty well because it is showing how the electrical grids have changed over time, because back then the technology wasn't that great.. I think that they could fix this by catching up if I might say with other countries technology, Because the U.S is trying to get some sort of upgrade of technology from China. Venezuela is also making their electricity grid give much more power out so they don't get blackout like they were with their old electricity grids. These reasons state the most important facts about the power outages in Venezuela.

This article talks about the Taliban attacking U.S. base in Afghanistan. These Taliban attackers had explosives planted and they detonated them. These Taliban soldiers started firing shots right after. All of the attackers were killed and the base was successfully defended. I relate this situation to the capture of Fort Ticonderoga. At Fort Ticonderoga, the Americans attacked in attempt to take the fort and all of its supplies. The Taliban had a similar goal in trying to force the U.S. out. However, the Americans won the engagement while the Taliban did not. The Americans captured Fort Ticonderoga successfully. These were both surprise attacks on the enemy.

This article is about president Obama. It is about his story and his life. President Obama has a father from Kenya and a mother from Kansas. He was born in Hawaii on August 4th, 1961. His grandmother and grandfather helped to raise him. Scholarships and student loans helped him, make his way through college. After college, he moved to Chicago and worked with various churches to help rebuild communities. He attended law school and became the first African-American president of The Harvard Law Review. After his graduation at law school he returned to Chicago. He did many things to help people out. He was elected 44th president of the United States on November 4th, 2008.
This article is related to something we learned about lasted year because we learned about the presidents and their lives. Obama went to law school, and so did some other presidents. Twelve of the presidents went to law school, seven graduated and five dropped out.

  39. I have read an article about the civil war that is going on over in Syria. The article had talked about how the war has caused over 2 million people to leave the country. The Civil war was stated when back in 2011 the protests in Egypt inspired people in Syria to also protest and the government have tried to take control by killing the protesters. Which has turned into a civil war? The US has also gone through a Civil war but over slavery. The US was split between north and south Syria is split between the Syria army, government and the civilians. The two wars are similar because both sides there were people leaving the country because they did not want to be involved in a war. Also because both sides are fighting against family and friends but both sides want different thing. For example the south wanted slavery and the north did not want slavery.

    anniversary-celebrations

Martin Luther King Jr. led the march on Washington D.C, on August 28th 1963, fifty years ago.
Martin spoke in a crowd of 250,000 people with "I have a dream" speech. On the same day of this
50th anniversary, President Obama gave a speech urging people to follow Martin Luther
King's inspiration on fighting racism. We shall remember Martin Luther King for all his
inspirational speeches and his effect on the country as a whole.

This recent event connects to US history because it shows racial tension, just like the civil war that happened so many years ago. Martin Luther King stood up for racial rights and racial equality, just like how we set slaves free during the civil war. It was not easy for Martin but in the end he succeeded, but he died in the process. In the civil war it was not easy either; there were tons of bloody battles that ended in death, but in the end we set the slaves free.

  41. In Syria there has been an outbreak of chemical attacks on Syrian civilians so the US has decided to take action and attack the main capital without the help of any other countries. This is quite odd because 56% of the people surveyed said they would not get in between this dispute while only 19% said they would take action and 25% they are not sure whether or not they would do anything. But the main reason behind wanting to step in is because of how many casualties there have been. On August 21 a reported 1,400 people were killed in the gas attacks lead by President Bashar al-Assad. I can relight this to the civil war because in Syria the president is try to promote the unnecessary deaths of hundreds of people while the other side of the city or the country or the world disagree with. So by starting this attack we are not only disagreeing with the gas attacks they are doing something about it much like the south did with breaking away from the north due to the slavery. So in the end I feel that this can be compared to the south breaking away from the north because of a disagreement on inappropriate killing of hundreds of people.

  42. Right now in the top news is the ongoing Civil War in Syria. The war is between the people who are loyal to the Baath government and between the people who are trying to get rid of the powerful people in the government. The army who is against the government is made up civilians who volunteer and of solders who used to be loyal to the Baath government. The Civil war started in March 2011.In June of this year is has been known that 100,000 people have died. Half of those people who have died were civilians. A couple weeks ago about one thousand people died including children. It is believed that government of Syria used chemicals weapons to kill the innocent people. In the news right now the world is wondering if America, president Obama will punish the Syrian government for what they did. The president Obama would punish them by using some kind of military strike.
The civil war in Syria reminds me of the Civil war in America that ended 150 years ago. The war left over 600,000 people dead. The civil war was one of the biggest events in United States history

The article i chose was about a recent terriost attack in Afghaninstan. What happened in this attack was the talabhan set off bombs, burned the veichles, and shut down the highways. This person did this for no reason other than trying to injury americans. Unfortuntly he succesed and killed 3 american soilders, but it was not a succesful attack. Thats what happened in this article.

This article is similar to the cival war because it's like the attack that john brown did on the south. They called him a terriost because he tried to arm the slaves and free them. But like the article john brown was unseccesful and killed only a couple conferdrate soilders just like the talabhan in afghanistan. Another reason why this article represents the cival war is because they both have no justice or rules. The terriost and john brown both just went in and started doing damage, the united states of america hated both of these tragidies (At the time for the john brown situation) so that's again another reason why this article and john brown had much in common. - Kevin n

  45. The article that I found was about how Maine's lobster industry is increasingly boosting. Before the 1990's there was only about 20 million pounds of lobsters caught by fisherman, but in 2012 there was about 127 million pounds of lobster caught by fisherman. Since there are so many lobsters being caught, the prices in Maine for lobsters are extremely low, causing fishermen to not earn a very good pay. The average lobster price per pound in Maine is only $2.69.

This article relates back to last year in the way that each side to the Civil War had its own particular economy or way to earn money. Specific types of economy are distributed to each side by what their soil is like, what their people are like and most importantly what the area is proximate to. For the northern region of the United States of America, most of the economy relates to industry or engineering. Also, the north accompanies a lot of factories. One of the most important parts of economy to the northern region is their galore of railroads. The south is extremely different from the north in most aspects, especially economy. Most of the southern economy relied on slaves to do work on large plantations to small family farms. Cotton is the main cash crop of the north and a major part of the North's economy.

  47. The article I chose was all about the presidential election this year. It said how each sides of the presidential race tried to find out information to make people go against the other side. I'm relating this to last years social studies lesson that was about all. The presidents and their races. In these races awhile back they tried to pull these schemes against each other. For example make posters, paintings, and even books. These would help those presidents win over states votes because of the things that that state wants from their president. Another thing about this article that relates to last years social studies class is each president has ideas of what solutions they have to the problems that the world has at this time. These solutions are reason that people vote for these individual presidents. And just like it is today, the. Two candidates running for president usually never agree on anything. Also sometimes the president got nicknames, and usually not nice ones, just like they do today. This was very common a long time ago. But there are some nice nicknames like honest Abe and such. But there were some bad nicknames like President Adams nickname. And that's all how the article I read related to Mr.Hartman's eighth grade social studies class.

Today we read the an artical about how some mascot are Indains and nickname for Indain tribes. Some native americans think its an insult cause they tink they are making fun of them. If i was them i would think of that is an honor that people are having your family culture as their mascot. Also if they did not have them as the mascot people think that we would just loose all respect for what all the tribes have done over the years.
