NATIVE AMERICAN MASCOTS

Pretend your are principal of Souderton Area High School. The school community and employees are debating changing Souderton's nickname so we are no longer known as the "Indians."

If you were principal would you want to keep or remove the "Indian" nickname? Why?

  1. I would keep the nickname for our mascot. I would keep it because it is tradition and changing it would ruin that. the article states that the nickname is a honor to native Americans therefore it should not be taken away. also, the article states that if we get rid of that nickname they will be forgotten.

  2. If I were principal of Souderton Area High School I would keep the "Indian nickname because we have always been the Indians. If our school changed it then it would cut us off from the past. Also, students take pride in the "Indian name" so if we took it out then students would be less interested in supporting the new name. Another reason we should keep the name is because we are recognizing Native Americans and their history by having one to represent our school. Finally, students have not been offended by the name so if that's the only reason we shouldn't keep the name then we should keep the "Indians" for our school. -Kevin D.

  3. Well if i was the principal there, i would remove the name. Although i have no idea what the big deal is, the people could have a real complaint about it and i would have no other choice by taking it down. The reason's could be that their complaining is that maby they think its an insult or somthing . i would too considering how we labeled them back then. ----------SEAN GLANZMANN

  4. I would change the "Indian" name because I see it as a little bit racist. Some people might make fun of the Indians during sports events when the maskot comes on people could make fun of that. Also if actual Indians saw a Maskot running around in a field, don't you think that is just going a bit too far, because all of that intense battling of the Indians trying to survive treated with a school maskot dressed up as an Indian and running around on the football field is just a little racist. If I were the principle I would change the maskot or anything else to somthing like the "Panthers" or "The Wolves".

  5. As principal of Souderton I think having a mascot as an Indian can be very offensive to some people. Although it doesn’t affect me I would rather change it and make the people that are feeling offended happy. In the passage it said “2,000 schools have given up Indian mascots”. It also says in the paragraph that name-calling is a problem. Some people think this is an insult and some people think it’s an honor but personally I disagree.

  6. i would keep the Indian nickname for several reasons.one reason is because most native Americans do not even care that we use the nickname. in fact, most native Americans see it as an honor. in my eyes, i see it as if we are honoring them too. if we were to get rid of the name, it would make those who feel that it is an honor get mad, especially considering the history of the native Americans. it would be like we were just trashing them or throwing them aside... AGAIN

  7. I would keep the "Indian" nickname because they were the ones who practically started civilization. Members of one Sioux tribe called Spirit Lake take pride in the name, saying it's an honor and that abandoning it would send the tribe one step closer to obscurity. When you hear them announce the name at the start of a hockey game, it gives you goose bumps. The Native Americans were very spiritual and they prayed for luck, so the Indians logo is special because it gives us a sense of luck to win. in 1970, there were more than 3,000 schools in the u.s., both high schools and colleges, using Indian names and symbols for their sports teams.

  8. I believe we should demolish the Indians as our Souderton High School mascot. The first reason I believe we should get rid of the name Indians is because it is racist and offensive to the Native American tribes that lived here before us. Also, I believe we should not be the Souderton Indians because it portrays a personality of Indians only being fighters or warriors. Finally, we should not be named the Souderton Indians because more than 2,000 schools have given up Indian Mascots. These are my three reasons why we should not be names the Souderton Indians.

  9. If I was the principal of this school and I was debating I would keep the name of the Souderton Indians, but I would change the mascot to be something else. I would keep the name because it reminds of the Indians in the 1800s, plus we are respecting them. Changing the mascot is important because while the mascot runs out on the football field it might do some stereotypical things that might be offense to some Indians. Plus some of the native Indians are proud to name a school after their race. I think we should also change the mascot because what they are wearing could be offense.

  10. If I were the principal of SAHS, I would keep the name "Indians." The name shows that we, as a high school, have integrity, and don't back down. Some Native Americans thought that the name was an honor. They thought that if you had the name then you respected them. They were being forgotten in America, and the people with the name were the only ones who remembered them. I haven't heard any people within the school complaining about the name "Indians." I think it would be a good idea to keep the name because its shows that we still care about the Native Americans, and don't fall under pressure of authority figures.

  11. I think the mascot "indians" should not be changed for souderton school district. First, its been the mascot for decades of years for the souderton area school district. Also I think that having the indians logo would be a honor to the indians, the logo would show remembrance to the indian tribes. Its not our intentions to disrespect the indian tribes of today.

  12. If I were the principal at Souderton I would remove the name. I would remove the name because people who are native american find this racist and offensive. also this could lead to name calling and stereo typing of our students. If we leave our team name as the Indians it will just lead to more problems and controversy so if we just change the name it will make our lives much easier.

  13. i think that we should not have to get rid of our mascots because it is not meant to be offensive towards Indians because it symbolizes that we play as Indians at sports games.
