Immigrant Journal #3- Initial Impressions of American cities

  1. The U.S. is so cool like, the mailman always gives me good advice and tells me about his ex-wife. My job is pretty sweet at the cloth factory. The buildings are huge and tall and super fantastic. I got lost several times because all the buildings look the same, tall and gray. My favorite part about the city is that theres a lot of people. Not everyone is nice though :(-----]-----< Kevin Dang and Sean Glanny

  2. When i got to New York I was soo suprised about how different it was compared to my hometown of Russia. The streets were filled with immigrants that just got there, along with the other immigrants that were there previously. the streets were filled with venders and people trying to sell thing like clothes food and other products that they sell. my Tenement was very cramped and there were other people that i didnt know living with me.-Thylar Summarell

  4. When I took my first step in America, I cried. I was so happy that I was finally here. The city I was going to be staying in was so overcrowded that I could barely see the street because there were so many people. Some parts were nicer than others. The place I was to stay in was called the 'slums.' It looked too small for my liking but I was pretty excited about staying in America for the first time.

  5. the first impression that on the city that we had was a wealthy new start for us when we saw new york and the statue of liberty i thought that i would have such a better life. but when i saw my new house and the dirty streets i thought that it was not the best places to live.

  6. The city in America was nothing what i though it would be like. For starters The city was over populated and filthy. At the same time it felt like a fresh new start because everything was new. The apartment was also very small but it was still better then my home back in my country.

  7. When I got off the boat, and stepped foot on Ellis Island I felt like a brand new person. I felt like there was a lot of oppurtunity for me to have a good future. As I got off the boat, it was very crowded and there were a lot of immigrants with all different kinds of languages that I couldn't understand. Everybody was very dirty, and it smelled really bad. Hopefully I can go to my tenement and get cleaned up.

  9. Our journey was long but we were glad to hit land. Before we got to into New York City, we had to go to Ellis Island for a registration and health check. There were 4 steps we had to go through before we could go into New York City. The first step was that we had to walk up the Great Hall steps and wait in line for our turn. That was the longest wait ever. The second step started the health test. It the was the eye test. They used a hook and pulled up our eyelids to see if we had diseases. It was the most painful test, but it was worth it to get freedom. The third step was the head and body test. They checked if you had lice and got the filth off. The fourth was the legal inspections. They had to pass a test to become legal in the United States.
